600 years of Anselm Adornes

December 8, 1424

In Bruges, Anselm Adornes is born, son of Pieter Adornes and Elisabeth Bradericx. No one can predict what a spectacular life son Anselm will lead.

In 2024, 600 years after Anselm's birth, he returns to the Adornes estate. So time to honour him throughout the year! All year long, we will be organising several interesting events. Will you join us through this festive year?

Exhibition

"Some, very honorable King of Scotland, are so foolish as to think that their own homeland is the only one."

From the travel account of Anselm and Jan Adornes, 1470, addressed to James III, king of Scotland.

Anselm and son Jan Adornes' travel account, written after their pilgrimage to Jerusalem, begins with a true plea for the virtues of travel. They point out the importance of opening up to other cultures and fighting ignorance.

It is a surprisingly modern and tolerant approach that made us think: what did Anselm experience on his many journeys? Did he learn from them? Would things be different today?

In this exhibition, we focus on the four main journeys Anselm Adornes made. A true citizen of the world, he was sometimes on the road for months at a time for different reasons: a diplomatic mission, a pilgrimage and an expedition

From Saturday April 13 at the Adornes Estate

Lectures

Throughout the year, we invite experts from all over Flanders to give an interesting lecture. They address themes in which Anselm was always interested and which were close to his heart. The experts look at the themes from a historical perspective but always make them burningly topical.

Book: A heavenly Jerusalem in Bruges

A dozen authors, led by professor Jan Dumolyn and honorary city archivist Noël Geirnaert illuminate the various facets of the extraordinary dynasty of the Adornes family.

The fascinating Jerusalem Chapel, a replica of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, with its atypical architecture and strong symbolic power is a testimony to strong ties the Adornes had with Jerusalem. The chapel, a Heavenly Jerusalem in Bruges, conferred special prestige on the family.

In the book you will find a critical genealogical analysis to a study of the collections, including an analysis of the architectural heritage and a presentation of the current managerial aspects of this patrimony that is still in private hands of the descendants of the founders.
